PEGS Wins Debating Grand Final 2008

The McNab House debating team has experienced significant success this season.

In the Debating Association of Victoria competition, one Year Twelve team comprised of Laura Aston, Tamsin Lawrence and Daniel Golder made it through the Essendon Region Rounds in the A Grade competition into the Finals series and then into the Grand Final, held on 14 October 2008.

Debating against Scotch College, the students argued against the topic ‘That Australia should introduce a carbon emissions trading scheme’. In an excellent debate, the PEGS team were awarded victory.

Six McNab House students: Daniel Golder and Oscar Dang; Laura Aston and Tamsin Lawrence; and Peter Andrew and Colin Chen also competed in the Thant Trophy competition run by the United Nations Youth Association.

Teams of two students were allocated a country on the Security Council of the UN and debated resolutions in a mock Security Council debate. In a competition involving approximately 200 teams from schools around Victoria, all three teams from PEGS made it through to the Grand Final. The competition was down to 15 teams. While all students involved were outstanding, Daniel Golder and Oscar Dang won the state competition and will now go to Sydney in December for the National Competition, the Evatt Trophy.

We wish them all the best as they represent both the school and the state. Congratulations to all the McNab House debaters for their efforts throughout the year.
