The Role

Applications are invited for an outstanding educator and music leader to join our school as Deputy Director of Music. This is an exciting opportunity for a highly capable teacher and collaborative leader to contribute to a vibrant Music Department and support the continued development of high-quality classroom, ensemble and performance programs.

The Deputy Director of Music will be an outstanding leader and classroom music teacher; knowledgeable in music curriculum and in current pedagogical thinking; committed to student well-being and able to demonstrate and model educational leadership in matters of classroom teaching and learning at years 7 to 12.

In addition to teaching classroom music and supporting the Director of Music, the Deputy Director of Music is responsible for overseeing the classroom music programme for the Middle and Senior Years and initiating ongoing improvement to the programme and its delivery in line with the values of the school.  They will attend assemblies and meetings across the school as required and be a passionate supporter of a high-quality music programme and attend after school rehearsals and performances.

The Deputy Director of Music will contribute to whole-school priorities, and play an active role in strengthening a culture of excellence, participation and continuous improvement within the Music Department including:

  •  Providing instructional leadership and support staff through mentoring, feedback and professional learning.
  • Leading the development, review and improvement of Middle and Senior Years classroom music programs.
  • Using student data and evidence-based practice to improve engagement, achievement and program effectiveness.
  • Contributing to moderation, assessment, reporting and curriculum planning processes.
  • Leading or supporting ensembles, performances, tours, concerts, assemblies, services and major music events.
  • Assisting with staffing, timetabling, budgeting, resource allocation and music program administration.
  • Promoting student wellbeing, participation and belonging through a strong and inclusive music culture.

This is a full-time ongoing leadership position, commencing January 2027.

The Deputy Director of Music will demonstrate:

  • Relevant qualifications and experience, including a teaching qualification and VIT registration
  • Outstanding educational leadership including exemplary teaching practice and pedagogical knowledge
  • Experience in leading high performing educational teams
  • The ability to build trusting and respectful relationships with students, staff and parents
  • A commitment to child safety, demonstrating an understanding of appropriate behaviours when engaging with children with diverse needs and backgrounds
  • High level interpersonal and communication skills
  • High level organisational skills
  • Well-developed ICT skill
  • An ongoing commitment to professional learning
  • Support for the values and policies of the school

They must also hold a current satisfactory criminal record check and be eligible to work in Australia to apply for this role.

The Music Programme
